ISD’s Katherine Keneally on tracking the rise of political violence in the US

ISD Director of Threat Analysis and Prevention Katherine Keneally spoke to Vox about the growing challenges of tracking, understanding and responding to political violence in the United States.

Recent high-profile incidents have raised questions among researchers and journalists about whether political violence is on the rise. As Katherine explained, it’s not easy to measure but one worrying shift is clear: more people seem willing to see violence as a legitimate way to address political grievances.

“We’re in a very difficult position in the country right now,” said Katherine. “I think this combination of this changing political environment, social media, and people feeling like they don’t have any other solution is making it at least feel like it’s worse.”
